Unleashing the Power of AI in HR: Exploring Opportunities and Navigating Challenges

As an experienced HR professional, I have become accustomed to interviews as an interviewer or interviewee. Recently, during an interview, I was asked about the current hot topics in the industry. Without hesitation, I mentioned #BLM, #ESG, #ED&I, #GenderPayGap, and #AI. The interviewer then posed an intriguing question: How do I see the impact of AI in HR? This didn’t surprise me, as I have been testing and utilizing AI tools like ChatGPT to support my daily work. However, it highlighted the dual challenge faced by HR professionals — how to effectively employ AI and simultaneously address its implications for other jobs.

In my day-to-day work using ChatGPT, I have witnessed several quick wins in AI’s power. One notable advantage is the ability to minimize repetitive tasks, thereby saving valuable time on mundane activities like automating letters and emails. Moreover, AI has facilitated improvements in employee communication, enabling me to allocate extra time to collaborate with colleagues, tailor projects and solutions for companies, and embrace more flexible work practices.

Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge that experience plays a vital role in assessing the reliability and validity of the content generated by AI platforms. As new generations increasingly rely on AI as a source of information, they will need to develop or enhance critical thinking skills to evaluate the platform’s output. Additionally, there is a concern that AI may blur the people decision making, which could directly impact society.

While it is still early to fully comprehend the impact of AI, a recent study published by the Journal of Applied Psychology shed light on some of its effects. The study found that AI has the potential to connect people more closely, fostering positive outcomes such as increased collaboration and strengthened friendships. However, it also highlighted negative impacts, including insomnia and an increased reliance on alcohol and drugs.

The key takeaway is that AI presents both opportunities and challenges for HR professionals. It streamlines processes, enhances productivity, and facilitates better communication. However, it also requires a cautious approach to ensure the reliability of AI-generated content and the preservation of critical thinking skills. Moreover, as AI continues to advance, it becomes imperative to monitor its effects on individuals and society as a whole.

In conclusion, the impact of AI in HR is a topic that warrants attention and exploration. As HR professionals, we must embrace AI as a valuable tool while considering its broader implications. By effectively leveraging AI, we can unlock new possibilities, streamline workflows, and drive positive change in the field of HR.
